The last time I saw my beloved Uncle Roy when he was cognoscente, he gave me a bible his mother had inscribed and an autograph book from his childhood.  The bible’s front cover was torn off and the autograph book tattered and stained with age.  My Uncle had few possessions except the books that lined his trailer. I know his autograph book had special meaning to him, but I was surprised at the gift of the bible.

I used to have passionate discussions about God and my “signature” theory with my Uncle Roy.  Because of family members and others who interpreted the bible as fundamentalist, my uncle had difficulty in seeing the love of God in the bible, just the twisted interpretations that had been preached at him.   In our debates he would remain a staunch atheist.   My uncle taught physics, chemistry, literature and French and after retiring, would sit for hours in his trailer smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, and thinking.

On August 30, 1995, I wrote to him, “although Lithium has saved many lives, the medical society treats it as a disorder instead of an expansion of the mind.  The problem I am trying to solve is as follows:

There are limits to what one person can do.

There are no limits to what the world can do.

I further wrote “I am creating a strategy to develop communication skills in everyone so they can process a hundred alternatives at one time instead of just one or two.  We limit ourselves and therefore limit the expansion of the brain.  We can change this through indirect communication and symbolism.  I am trying to create my own job and network this idea throughout the world.  What do you think?  Does it sound interesting?  Do you like my quote?  Can you improve upon it?”

Years later, Uncle Roy answered my question with the gift of the autograph book and the bible.  He had concluded, there were limits to what the world can do and answered with the bible and the autograph book.  The problem needed to be restated as.

“There are limits to what one person or the world can do.

There are no limits to what God can do.

The Presence of God's Grace

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”  Ephesians 1:7

Today’s sermon in Going Deeper at Christ Church, my pastor reminded me that only through Christ’s death and blood on the cross are we reconciled to God and receive his grace and the presence of his Holy Spirit. 

This week has been very emotional for me.  I am building a home in a neighborhood for a family I do not yet have.  I know God has called me to build this house in this very special neighborhood in which I feel the presence of God’s grace.  But grace is not only open to me or this neighborhood, it is present for all of God’s children.  I have received abundantly God’s love and grace even after my most sinful behavior hurt others.  This week I was reminded of my own selfishness in black and white as someone called out for help while letting go of her heart symbolized in a simple act of sharing.    This was a reflection of love, light, and grace in her and God's answer to my prayer.  

To Everything There is a Season

“To everything there is a season,

A time for every purpose under heaven.”  Ecclesiastes 3:3 (NKJV)

 In the Greek language there are two words describing time, Kronos and Kairos.  Kronos time is experienced in measured sequential increments. We experience our physical life journey from birth to death in Kronos time.  Kairos is experienced in cycles and moments of God’s perfect timing and renewal.  The seasons renewing Earth symbolize Kairos or God’s time.

Our modern society is driven by Kronos time.  Our lives are dictated by the tick of the clock and we accomplish as much as we can in a twenty-four-hour day.  But Kairos time is eternal and infinite, existing inside and outside the three dimensional space that Kronos time is measured.  Kairos is the eternal at work  on Earth where the physical manifests from an eternal consciousness not bound by Kronos time.  In Kairos, points in Kronos space and time come together when we follow our soul and God, but these points cannot be hurried.  Therefore, taking actions to force results inconsistent with our eternal soul and God's will, never satisfy us.  But those choices can be a learning process in our spiritual journey.  God in his eternal and infinite plan, forgives us when we choose unwisely and provides course corrections.

The lot I am building my dream home is located where two roads intersect.  I was not conscious of the symbol of a crossroad until after I signed the contract. In Kairos time, my decision came together in one moment or crossroad.  I knew in my soul that God called me to build my Christmas House on this lot to accommodate a family I do not yet have.  God took me through many decision points in my life to lead to this realization.  His faithful presence has taught me to follow my heart and soul consistent with his will even when it poses risks. I know God will provide exactly what I need when I need it.  The purpose of each step on my journey has been to strengthen me in my faith and to grow closer to God.

Solomon in Ecclesiastes describes our lives as a breath that disappears in the air.  But he also wrote “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.”  Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NKJV)
