“Do
not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come
bring peace, but a sword.”
- Matthew
10:34 (NKJV)
I
recently received a Facebook posting of an article on how the Air Force Academy
directed by the US Administrative branch was discouraging the posting of Bible
quotes in dorm rooms. It reminded me of a conversation I had with my nephew
James on the importance of his faith in Jesus last year. James is a Lieutenant
Colonel in the Air Force. He commented those who would not extend the
Bill of Rights Freedom of Religion to all Americans, especially those who fight
for justice and liberty of all, do not understand what it is to risk your life
in battle without a faith in God. When I compare the mental and physical
discipline to assume a “battle position” required in the military to fight, my
“battles” to do right seem so unimportant. But I believe God delivers to
each of us a “battle” to fight and Jesus never promised following him would be
easy. Although each of us long for peace, this life often requires
us to put our values and future at risk which is not an easy emotional or
physical task.
My
great-niece, Christina, was inducted as an Airman into the Air Force in
November on a cold, rainy and blustery day. As the Air Force Chaplain
said a prayer and then the new Airmen shouted their creed, I could not of been
prouder of my niece.
I am an American Airman.
I am a Warrior.
I have answered my Nation’s call.
I am an American Airman.
My mission is to Fly, Fight, and Win.
I am faithful to a Proud Heritage.
A Tradition of Honor,
And a Legacy of Valor.
I am an American Airman.
Guardian of Freedom and Justice,
My Nation’s Sword and Shield,
Its Sentry and Avenger.
I defend my Country with my life.
I am an American Airman.
Wingman, Leader, Warrior,
I will never leave an Airman behind,
I will never falter,
And I will not fail.
