The Reflective Power of God's Light

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:16

Last night, my pastor preached that our humanity is like the moon which can only reflect back the light of the sun.   We are unable to generate our own light, but can only reflect the light of God.

This sermon reminded me of a trip my mother and I made years ago to visit the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis.  The Cathedral Basilica contains 41.5 million glass mosaics with over 7,000 colors composed in beautiful patterns and pictures.  The Basilica is lit primarily by one circular window opposite of the sanctuary.  The light from the single window reflects and sparkles on the glass mosaics and dances around the Nave of the Cathedral. The light reflecting on the mosaics also reminded me that reflective thought requires us to accept the love of God in order to evaluate our own thoughts and actions.  The definition of reflect means to give back or show an image.  When we surrender to God, our soul lights up through his presence, and we shine or reflect the image of God who is love.
